Which paint finish do I choose?

Hey peeps! So, look there is a lot of information floating around about which paint #brand is #better. It's mainly #marketing for #companies trying to push their own #products and agenda. Not surprising since ALL brands do that.

When you walk into a #homedepot or #lowes you can expect to see brands such as: #glidden, #valspar, #olympic, #rustoleum, #hgtvhome, #behr, #sherwinwilliams and #benjaminmoore just to name a few.

There are some brands that are better than other brands out there. However, my job today is not to #endorse any brand. I do not make any money by telling you to buy one #brand over the other. If it ever came to that and I did #promote one it would be only because I personally LOVED the product and felt comfortable #endorsing them.

The more #basic and important #question is which #paint #finish do I choose?

I want to help #educate you on the different #finishes and which one works in your #room.

I would say most anyone who has ever painted anything knows that there are different paint finishes. However, not everyone knows what the differences are.

So, my friends, let a sister help you out. Here are my recommended finishes room by room.

#KITCHEN-

  • Main functions: Cooking, washing dishes, eating. (Think spills, splashes, messy)

  • Best Finish: High Gloss or Semi Gloss

  • Tip: The "glossier" the #paint the lower the amount of #pigment and less #resin. This makes the finish #durable and easier to #clean. *Downside- The glossier the paint = the more visibility of flaws like scratches or rubs. * Buy extra paint for occasional touch ups.

  • Other #messy spaces to consider using Semi Gloss- #Kids rooms and/or #mudrooms.

#LIVINGROOM-

  • Main functions: Watching TV, entertaining, relaxing. (Think lots of people, sometimes food involved, commonly used room)

  • Best Finish: Satin

  • Tip: Finish affects #luster and #washability which translates into walls that are either #shiny or #dull, #hard-wearing or less so. The rule is when in doubt...use #satin.

#DININGROOM-

  • Main functions: #Entertaining, special #occasions, #eating. (Used sparingly, low traffic)

  • Best Finish: Eggshell

  • Tip: This finish is good for clean, #smooth looking walls in low traffic areas. *For a more #modern look try using the same color in different finishes. Walls in eggshell and trim in semigloss.

#BEDROOM-

  • Main functions: #Sleeping, holding your stuff and well... (Low traffic, not used for company)

  • Best Finish: Flat or Matte

  • Tip: #Flat paint covers walls more #quickly since there is extra #pigment. That translates into less #coats= less #money. (Usually not the case when going from an extremely #dark paint to a #lighter color)

  • Free Pro tip- #benjaminmoore #matte finishes can be used almost anywhere. All their finishes are extremely #durable.

#BATHROOM-

  • Bonus of the day: Full Gloss looks best when used on a #ceiling with expensive #lighting.

  • Stay tuned for alternative design options to update a flat white ceiling on the next blog.
